Ask most people what copywriting is, and the
chances are they’ve never even heard of it. Even if they
have, they may not know exactly what it is.
Here’s
what Copywriting Agencies will NEVER tell you…
Ask people in a typical ad agency
how important copywriting is, and they’ll tell you the copy
(the words in an ad or sales letter) is less important than
pretty pictures. In their eyes, the words are there to
‘entertain the reader’. They’ll also say
the purpose of ads is to win awards (even though they won’t
admit it), but this is their real motivation.
FACT: Effective copy will outsell ‘pretty
pictures’ every time
Awards only benefit the Copywriting agency
– not the client.
I’ll also let you in on another little
secret.
FACT:
Most advertisements that win awards do NOT sell products
Did you know most companies who hire award
winning ad agencies almost never sell any products (or rarely
enough to make a profit) from the advertisements, and almost
all of those clients fire the ad agencies after the promotions?
Here’s
the reality…
The fact is that over 525 of sales messages
lose money (probably more). Sometimes big money. Sometimes
they don’t get any response at all. This leaves the tiny
handful (about five percent) of sales messages
which:
1. Actually sell you a product
2. Actually make money out of selling
you that product.
This
is the area in which I operate, and in which YOU must
operate if you are to earn good money in your business
Everywhere you look, in direct mail letters,
newspapers, magazines, and online, there are hundreds and hundreds
of adverts. Some large, some small, some from big firms, some from
‘one man band’ companies. Now the thing I notice
about all of these adverts, if I happen to be flicking through a
newspaper or magazine, is:-
They’re
almost all complete and utter rubbish
The vast majority are put together by people
who haven’t the faintest idea of how to write an advert selling
their product or service. It amazes me how these ads pull in any
response at all. In fact, most of them DON’T.
When you look through a magazine, you barely
notice the advertisements. They’re usually written by an ad
agency, which isn’t held accountable for any results.
Frankly,
these ads are terrible
Not all are terrible, but most are.
How do I know? I base this claim on cold hard facts. Namely, does
the advertisement make measurable money when it is run in the newspaper,
magazine or website?
Ad agencies usually don’t care. They
only care if the ad wins awards, not if it makes money (and
the two do NOT go together). If an ad wins creative
awards it makes no money. It’s the same story with online
sales letters or direct mail.
On the other hand, the ads and direct mail
letters which make money are different. VERY different. Why?
Simple. They use a set of proven and highly effective marketing
rules, which taken together are known as Direct Response
Copywriting.
The
Facts About Direct Response Copywriting…
Direct response
means that a company knows right down to the penny if the advertisement
worked and made money. There are different techniques used
to measure the response to the ad or sales letter, but the fact
remains that direct response copywriting is ACCOUNTABLE
copywriting.
You see, the real purpose
behind sales copy is to convince the prospect or client to take
action - whether they’re interested in more information
– or actually buy something, thus closing the sale and making
money for you and your company.
Moving your prospect to action should be the
purpose of all your sales letters…
You should always tell your prospects why they should pay attention
to you, why they must have what you’re offering, why you are
the only logical choice (through proof) and then
what they must do next to move ahead.
